Why it made the Edit

  • This is one I have actually used, and it ticks a lot of practical boxes for me.
  • It is essentially tasteless and mixes easily into hot or cold drinks, smoothies, milk kefir, yoghurt and other foods. That makes it easy to use consistently without another complicated routine.
  • I like the screw-top tub. It stores neatly, stacks well with other supplements in the cupboard and is easier to live with than another large pouch.
  • Hydrolysed collagen is broken into smaller peptides, which is why it mixes so easily. Collagen is rich in amino acids such as glycine and proline that are common in connective tissues including tendons, ligaments, cartilage, skin and bone.
  • Human research suggests collagen peptides may support connective-tissue adaptation when paired with appropriate loading or resistance exercise. I see it as a complement to training and food, not a substitute for either.

How I use it

  • I add it wherever it disappears easily: coffee, tea, smoothies, milk kefir, yoghurt, soups or baking.
  • For general use, there is no magic time of day. Some research looking specifically at tendon and connective-tissue adaptation has used collagen around exercise.

Collagen is protein, but it is not nutritionally equivalent to whey, eggs, dairy, meat or another complete protein source. I would not use it as the main protein source in a meal or post-training shake.

Use and cautions

How the label frames use

  • Add a heaped teaspoon, approximately 10 g, to smoothies, yoghurt, soups, broth, hot or cold drinks, or dishes.

Warnings

  • Contains bovine collagen peptides.
  • Collagen is relatively low in essential amino acids such as leucine and does not contain tryptophan. It should complement, not replace, complete dietary protein.
  • Always read the label and follow the directions for use.
